Do you want to use your mobile phone when visiting the United States? Do you want to keep in touch with family, friends and colleagues? Do you want to use maps, take photos, send messages, read about new places and make phone calls too?
Don't waste your time searching for businesses that advertise free Wi-Fi. Don't restrict yourself to unpredictable hotel Wi-Fi. And don't trust open or unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks unless you're using a VPN like Encrpyt.me (iOS) (Android) [affiliate link].
If you’re planning on visiting the U.S. and want to use voice and data on your mobile phone, first check with your wireless carrier to find out if your plan includes free roaming. If your plan doesn't include free roaming and you need service for 21 days of less –– T-Mobile is your best option.
So, why is T-Mobile the best wireless carrier for international visitors to the U.S.? The self-proclaimed Un-carrier ranks #1 in customer service, #1 in the availability of 4G and offers an affordable, hassle-free, set-it-and-forget-it tourist plan that's exclusively designed for international visitors to the U.S.
In this post, I'm going to tell you about the T-Mobile Tourist Plan.
When you arrive in the U.S., bring your unlocked GSM phone to a T-Mobile retail store in the 48 contiguous states as well as Hawaii and Puerto Rico. You can also visit an InMotion store at major airports. A T-Mobile representative at one of these locations will help you activate the Tourist Plan.
If you don't have time to visit a T-Mobile representative in person, you can purchase a T-Mobile® Tourist SIM Activation Kit online. However, Tourist Kits can only be shipped to U.S. addresses. If necessary, enlist family, friends or colleagues to help. The SIM includes 21 days of service on the Tourist Plan.
The T-Mobile Tourist Plan is for 1 line. If you need an additional line for a friend or family member, you must purchase separate Tourist Plans.
Tourist Plan: $30 / Per Line
- Available for unlocked, GSM-compatible phones
- Free SIM (U.S. phone number)
- 21 days of service
- 2GB of 4G LTE data (slower speeds after 2GB)
- 1,000 minutes of domestic talk (International talk not included)
- Unlimited domestic and international texts
- Wi-Fi Hotspot: Use your phone to connect other devices, using your 2GB allotment of 4G LTE data
To check the compatibility of your phone with T-Mobile's Tourist Plan, ask a T-Mobile representative or visit T-Mobile's technologies and frequencies page.
Use T-Mobile's coverage map to ensure service is available for the locations you plan to visit.
If you travel outside of T-Mobile's network, your talk and text allotment will use another carrier’s network, but still remain unlimited. When this occurs, your domestic data roaming will be limited to 200 MB. Don't worry, though. You'll receive a text message when you near 200 MB.
Additional Prepaid Plans
T-Mobile's Tourist Plan is designed for short-term, international visitors to the U.S and expires 21 days after activation –– no extensions. If you're staying longer in the U.S., you may want to consider one of T-Mobile's other prepaid plans instead. All prepaid plan include – no credit check, no annual contract and no overage fees.
